Ice Blood
Countless whales are still being killed every day. They were guardians of the ocean but consistently diminished because of human greed.
The number of whales is decreasing day by day, with the wanton hunting of human beings. Japan is a nation that kills the most significant number of whales every year. On September 1, 2019, fishing boats from Taiji, Wakayama, Japan, officially went out to sea to hunt whales and dolphins, which continued to April 2020.
The Problem
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission adopted the Global Convention on banning Whaling, which strictly prohibits state parties from engaging in commercial whaling. Japan has repeatedly hunted whales worldwide on the grounds of the so-called studying the physiological habits of whales. With animal protection groups protesting at the spot, Japan always deploys guards at the scene of hunting.
Sketch & Research
The initial idea of the art installation was to mimic the whole process of hunting whales. How to present the grim reality of whale killing to the audience from an artistic perspective and call on humans to protect marine life?
Preparation
Color Change Test
Failure
Three series of chemical tests
The initial chemistry test was to test which two chemicals could produce a reaction from blue to blood red.
Success
Turning blue water into blood-red water requires the indirect method of chemically reacting a yellowish solution of a ferric ion with colourless crystals of KSCN.
